Looking back at my path as a player, it was not the right or wrong way to get to a high level. It was my own difficult road. Could it have been smoother if I had a family advisor guiding me on a path in youth hockey rather than playing for 5 different associations in 10 years?
Would I have ended up playing NCAA Division I hockey in college rather than in the ACHA if I had an advisor helping me gain exposure in high school? Would I have chosen to play in a country other than Finland if I had an agent that was seeking out other possible teams for me to play on? When I was in Finland and wanted to find a new team, would I have been able to with an agent?

My answer to all of these questions from research and first hand experience is Yes, without a doubt. I got as far as I did not using many personal connections in the hockey community, and I know that this is a very difficult way to pursue a dream. How often do you hear the story about a player who was average making a team he has no business being on? It happens all of the time, and it does all the way up the line no matter the level. Relationships are key, and they are what makes having an advisor or agent so beneficial.
